Leaders Are Readers

My students need books, like Freedom Writers' Diary, Pride and Prejudice, and 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, to use as supplemental reading in my English classes.

My Students

Mark Twain once said that the man who can read and chooses not to is worse off than the man who can't read at all. I want my students to know the joy of reading! I want them to have the opportunity to read more than what's in our textbooks, to read the classics as well as more modern works.

I teach Alternative Education High School in Central Oklahoma.

Our focus is credit recovery, but students come to us for other reasons, as well. Some have health or family struggles. Some need a smaller class environment. More often than not, my students come from backgrounds where education and goal setting are not a priority. I strive everyday in my classroom to motivate these teens to be their best selves. Whatever they need, I am here to help them. Their success is my top priority. I believe the reading projects these books afford will cultivate self-pride in my students, and focus will become more apparent in their lives. They will become more aware of who they are and how they should treat others in the world around them.

My Project

I teach literature from the Early American Beginnings, writings from the first "Freedom Writers". We read a Native American piece, a colony settler's perspective, a slave narrative, and The Declaration of Independence. I point out how each group used writing and the English language to document and/or change their situation. Then, we read excerpts from Erin Gruwell and her students', "The Freedom Writers Diary", as well as excerpts from the diaries of Anne Frank and Zlata Filapovich. We discuss how the modern "Freedom Writers" are both the same and different from those of Early America as well as how the students can use communication to express and better themselves. Copies of the actual "Freedom Writers Diary" book would mean not just reading excerpts, and this unit would become even more real to my students. We only have 3 chapters of Pride and Prejudice in our textbook, and I would like the students to be able to read the whole novel. The "Habits" book would allow more non-fiction.

The classical learning as well as real life application that takes place through the study of these books will help prepare my students for their future.

This ever-constant, yet ever-changing world demands our students be classically-cultured as well as modernly-minded. This is the type of balanced teaching I strive for in my classroom. These book sets will help me and my students greatly. We thank you for your consideration and any assistance provided.
