My Students

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!" Dr. Seuss has inspired children for decades to dream big, and it is my goal as a teacher to enrich the lives of my students through reading so that they too can soar to new heights!

My 4th grade students attend a very small, rural Pennsylvania school.

Many of my students come from low-socioeconomic families and do not have much exposure to different cultures and parts of the world. Because of that, I highly value literature within my classroom, and I feel that reading is the gateway to inspire future learning. However, it is often difficult to instruct students who are reading at a wide variety of levels. To better meet the needs of my students, I began researching the "Daily 5" reading program, created by Gail Bouchey and Joan Moser. The Daily Five is a series of literacy tasks which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals. While completing these tasks, students are given the opportunity to choose their own books that interest them, at their own reading level, and they work together with their teacher on individualized learning goals that best meet the academic needs of the child.

My Project

With the book organizers and clipboards, my students will be given the opportunity to move freely throughout their classroom, away from the confines of a desk and chair. In their book boxes, students will be able to keep all of the leveled readers, notebooks, and strategy cards they need to be successful with their literacy tasks. Along with their book boxes, their clipboards will create a mobile working station as determined by the student, placing them in a learning situation that they are most comfortable in, which will in-turn inspire work ethic and immersion in their reading tasks.

I instruct a population of very enthusiastic learners and I am anxious to introduce these new resources into their classroom routine, because I know they will share my excitement.

The Daily 5 reading program helps students to set goals and find success at their own individualized level, allowing all students to realize their innate potential that will propel them in their future educational endeavors.
