Laurel Youth Drumline Startup in Oakland, CA!

My Project

In the Spring of 2024, I had the honor of traveling to New Orleans, Louisiana; a place - as a career music educator - I revere and appreciate as the cradle of American music. Teaching many students who had family in the area, or were connected to New Orleans in some way, I was especially excited to connect with the culture and music of the region.

What I saw in the streets in New Orleans - raucous call and responses, make-shift instrumentations delivering standards old and new, dynamic movement and energy - was a spectacle that I knew had the power draw our Oakland community together by our shared musical roots.

Particularly, a drumline sits at the forefront of my memory. I saw our students in the performers' movements, in the way they reacted to each other, and in the way they connected to the sacrament of our shared musical lineage, which drew in a joyous crowd of spectators and community members.

I sincerely believe the opportunity for our students to explore this musical connection would be transformative not only for them, but for our Oakland/Laurel Family at large, where cultural expression and celebration is a cornerstone of our community.

Access to the equipment requested through this project will also provide students with opportunities to engage in a more robust instrumental music curriculum, which serves a larger effort by our school district to provide more opportunities and exposure to the arts for all Oakland students.

The Laurel Drumline would function to be a representative entity of our school community, and would serve to promote the visibility of the indomitable creative spirit of our students. On behalf of all Laurel Lions, I thank you for your time and consideration in helping this dream come true!
