I serve students in a self-contained autistic support classroom. The students in my class have diverse needs and require a high level of structure and evidence-based instruction and behavioral supports in order to achieve full potential. They come to school each day ready to be challenged to reach for the next bar, which looks different for each of them. Some of my students are learning to write their names. Others are learning names for common objects like shoes and pencil. Still, some others are working at-grade level and trying his or her very best during their inclusion time with their same-aged peers in regular education.
The students in my class often face many challenges.
These challenges can be lessened or eliminated through quality education. Each DonorsChoose.org project is selected with this in mind. A lot of times, the materials accessed through generous donations wouldn't be otherwise available to these students in any setting. For them, the materials we have in our classroom make a big difference!
My Project
Students with autism often require remediation not only in academic skills, but other domains, as well. Materials such as a washer, dryer, and laundry soap will allow my students to develop important life skills such as sorting clothing by color, measuring soap, and selecting wash/dry cycles. Students may also learn skills such as folding and putting clean clothes on hangers.
Each student will benefit from these materials in a unique way that will improve his or her quality of life.
The skills learned can be easily transferred into the community at laundromats or in the home setting where they can help their families. Additionally, a washer and dryer will provide students access to clean uniforms.
