This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our charter academy is a diamond in the rough. We are located in Los Angeles, California and serve 361 students. Our students are predominately Hispanic coming from challenging home lives, low-income/high poverty district, (98% of our student population are eligible for free or reduced lunch). Although our students and their families face many challenges, we have built an extremely close community that goes far beyond the scope of a typical school. The parents are happy to contribute to the learning community in any way they can, and are actively involved in the education of their children, even though many are balancing multiple jobs. Our students come to school proud to be ICEF Scholars and are committed to success. I feel that it is my duty to ignite a love for learning in my students and to create life-long learners.
My Project
Having the non-fiction guided reading collections with greatly benefit my students. Our classroom library is predominately fictional stories, which our students love, however having access to exciting non-fiction books will bolster their success as well rounded scholars. The reading instruction in my classroom is done through Reader's Workshop. The students have experienced first hand, the value of reading, as we've laughed and cried together through read-alouds and shared reading. Built into our daily schedule is guided reading, shared reading, read aloud, and independent reading.
My goal is increase the rigor in my classroom as I challenge students to entrench themselves in non-fiction texts.
If I am able to show students the value of reading; that if you are able to read and comprehend the world is at your fingertips, I know they will successful throughout their educational career.
