My Students

Do you remember the first time, as a child, going to your school library and looking at all the books? Thinking which one should I choose first? Reading often and early is proven to affect a child’s success, but my students don't currently have access to library books at their school.

I am a first grade teacher at a charter school for children of extremely high intellectual ability located in North Carolina.

My students are voracious readers and have such enthusiasm about books! In the past, field trips have been taken to the local public library but travel time, along with busing problems, have limited the time a student gets to actually look at the books and spend time in the library. Books are how many of our great leaders grew their minds and their experiences. Shouldn't my students get to have these same opportunities right in their school building? A charter school in North Carolina receives no funding for its building, so for the past eleven years we have been leasing buildings. Through hard work and our generous community, this year we have moved into our permanent home. Now a group of parent volunteers is working on building a new library collection to provide resources for our students.

My Project

Through your generosity, my first grade class hopes to help launch our library. This year, we would like to donate books from some of our classroom favorites to our emerging library. My students love to read about Cynthia Rylant's Poppleton, Stan and Jan Berenstain's Berenstain Bears, etc. These books will give not only my class, but all of our scholars an opportunity to develop their reading skills.

As our library grows, our opportunities grow.

Books do many things – one of which is taking a child on an adventure. Thank you so much for helping to launch our students’ adventures!
