Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at an elementary public school in a 5th grade Dual Language class setting in Elmhurst, Queens where we highly encourage multilingualism. We currently have two dual language classes in every grade and adding each an additional classes every year! (We have 3 in kindergarten and 3 in first grade!) We have been out of school since mid-March and finding resources that correspond in both English and Spanish has been incredibly difficult. We don't know what the next year will look like, but we have already started planning in the event that it will be completely remote.
My upcoming 5th graders are sweet, determined and bright learners who deserve read aloud books in book English and Spanish.
Whether or not we are learning in person, remote, or a bit of both, I want them to have access to read aloud books in Spanish and English, which is keeping to a true dual language program. I have some books in English, but want to equalize their learning opportunity by providing Spanish counterparts to these texts.
My Project
After having experienced a half a year teaching in person and half a year teaching remotely, I found that while there were resources available in English, there was a disparity of it in Spanish. I want to immense my students in a true dual language program experience by providing students the same text in both English and Spanish.
Providing me with this books can help my partner teacher and I plan for their reading and writing lessons whether we are working remotely or in person this upcoming fall.
Being able to teach the same book in English and Spanish will greatly help our students dive more deeply into the skills they need to succeed in both the content and the language.
