Do you know how to make someone giggle? I'm a 7th grade English Language Arts teacher in one of the nation’s high need school districts in Chicago. Our school provides an education for students in prekindergarten - eighth grade. My school has a poverty rate of 90.4% and these families qualify for free or reduced priced lunches and meal. My culturally and linguistically diverse students range from students learning English as a new language, self motivated learners to students with special needs. My school is located in an area where gangs and illegal activities are common. Students have been accosted on their way to school and asked to join gangs. Laughter is not at all a bad beginning for a friendship, and it is far the best ending for one." Oscar Wilde
Do you know the secret to making someone giggle? Books are powerful tools when readers are completely hooked on what they are reading. Reading provides students with many opportunities to think critically and analytically about what an author has to say to them. In my classroom, I want to create multiple experiences for my students to develop social skills and prevent misunderstandings of one another as they read books that make them laugh while learning socially acceptable skills.
In a society where gun violence among school age students has increased. Using this approach inside the classroom, students feel safe to take risk, share what they are reading and learn from one another. In addition my students learning English as a new language profit from engaging in exploratory conversations about text and relating what they are reading to real world situations.
The secret to making someone giggle is providing my students with multiple copies of the Diaries of a Wimpy Kid Saga. These comical novels are written in cartoon form and are great motivators for reluctant and struggling readers. On behalf of my deserving students, please consider my proposal.
