Latin Lives!

My students need 30 copies of the poet Virgil's masterpiece of Latin literature, "The Aeneid."

Where Latin meets the real world... I am the only Latin teacher in an urban district of over 80,000 students. I teach 9-12 grade students, Latin I through Latin III.

My students love mythology. Unfortunately, the district provides us with only a dated grammar book for Latin, a book that has few supplements pertaining to mythology and culture. While modern languages get newer textbooks more often, the Latin program must make do with one set of aging books that do not sufficiently describe our cultural debt to the Latin language and culture.

I want to get my students reading the real thing. Virgil is the master of Latin literature, and the Fagles' translation of Virgil a masterpiece in itself. By reading the story of Aeneas, from the Trojan War to his founding of Rome in Italy, I can incorporate history, politics, mythology, and many other facets of Roman life into my daily lessons. These copies of 'The Aeneid' will help my students to realize that Latin is most certainly not a dead language, not just a page in the history book of civilizations.

Your help will allow children to explore an area of thought and study that is not available anywhere else in the curriculum. You will allow them to access the powerful myths of an ancient civilization and help them to position our government, our culture- everything that is ours- against a needed sense of history.
