Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My engineering students prototype the projects they design, and my robotics students build custom parts for their competition robots. I want them to have access to the types of tools used by professional machinists in real-world manufacturing environments.

The roughly 700 students in grades 9 and 10 who attend our school at the southern tip of the city of Los Angeles are mostly (91%) Latino .

Surrounded by several refineries and the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the school serves a blue-collar, working class community with a substantially (70%) economically-disadvantaged population. The majority of our parents work for these industries and others in the Los Angeles industrial harbor vicinity.

My Project

Throughout the year, I have engineering students designing projects, as my robotics team builds robots for competition. Currently, they cut out parts with hand tools, and have not been able to make parts out of anything other than sheet aluminum. With a lathe, they'll be able to make customized round parts, drill holes in precise patterns, and thread objects for assembly.

My students live in an area which has opportunities for manufacturing jobs.

Our school's mission is to prepare them not only for those jobs, but also for careers in engineering. By giving them access to a lathe, they can learn skills that can lead to manufacturing careers. By giving them the ability to accurately prototype their engineering projects, they will also gain experiences that can encourage them to pursue careers in engineering.
