Lasting Lab Inquiry: Chemistry & DNA

My project needs six lab experiment kits including a DNA activity model and a Food Chemistry and Nutrition Kit, for 140 students to participate in science lab inquiry in the classroom.

Last year I tried something different with my middle school science students. I made every Friday "Lab Day." The students loved it. I want to continue "Lab Days" this coming school year and add chemistry and DNA labs. When students are engaged in a lab in small group settings, they take away so much more form the lesson. They get so involved they just don't want to quit. That is so exciting! The labs I have chosen are great for any classroom and can be conducted using classroom desks. With the DNA models, students will have the resources to build their own double helix replicas. This DNA lab will add to their understanding of DNA and what it looks like. The chemistry labs will be useful in my nutrition unit, students will use the lab materials to uncover the chemical make up of common foods. They will explore carbohydrates, proteins, fats, pH, etc. The special effects lab materials will illustrate to students how the brain interprets information using the senses. They will be amazed at how their brain effects sound and sight. My goal as a teacher is to make science fun. If students are engaged in labs about real things they can relate to, they are much more likely to retain what they learned. Then they will have a greater understanding of the concept taught. If students can get excited about science, who knows? They could consider working in the field of science after high school.
