Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have come into high school behind grade level but these students are not quitters. We have a strong culture of achievement and encourage all students to prepare for and apply to college.
Were you to walk down the halls of my school, you might think you are in the United Nations.
We have students from five continents (and more than that from a number of islands) representing a diverse array of languages and cultures. My students are a mix of new immigrants and native born Americans. All of them want to succeed.
My Project
Several weeks ago, I was fortunate to attend a workshop in which the facilitator guided us through interactions with math, using pieces he had fabricated on a laser cutter. I was fascinated by the durable, low-cost, intricately cut manipulatives we used.
I would like to get such a laser cutter for my classroom.
I have ideas of a few projects already that I could implement with a tool like this. For example, I could have the students construct a self-supporting catenary arch from pre-cut pieces designed by George Hart. Or we could follow some of the curve-stitching activities suggested by Mary Everest Boole. I could also spur the imagination of some of my more creative students, by allowing them to design and cut their own pieces. I have already seen how interested they have been in our classroom 3D printer. This would be a nice addition to our MakerSpace.
