This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students need to develop their skills with laptops. They do not all have access to them at home and thus need to be able to use them at school in order to be prepared for the new exams which they will need to take online next year. Having laptops available daily allows them to develop the skills
I teach at a school with 65% poverty and thus not all my students have the same access to technology at home.
I hope to provide this opportunity in the class. This year I was 1:1 with laptops in the classroom and really saw an increase in their writing and research skills. They realized how much access they had and they loved the ease of revising and editing their writing without having to rewrite their whole paper.
My students are also all identified as being gifted, and thus need all the opportunities they can be given. They come to school each day ready and eager to learn. We have connected globally in many ways this year. We have used Mystery Skype, we have pen pals in Australia and just Skyped with them for the first time. We tweet and participated in Global Read Aloud to connect with other classes over a great book.
Next year I will have a larger class and thus will be short laptops. I hope to be able to acquire a few more to keep our class 1:1.
My Project
These Chromebooks will be used across the curriculum. They will be used for writing and will make the writing process so much easier that they will write more than they would without the laptops. After all, who wants to totally rewrite a paper when you could just revise on a computer with ease?
The Chromebooks will also be used for research and coding. I have included coding in the curriculum and the students really enjoy learning this new vital skill. They also will use the laptops for their basic research projects and participation in Genius Hour.
We will also use this technology to connect with classes across the globe sharing what we learn and learning from them. Mystery Skypes are a wonderful way to learn about the world, as is connecting with pen pals. We will participate in Global Read Aloud and use blogs to discuss our reactions to the book we will read.
These Chromebook laptops will provide the opportunities so many children would miss out on without them.
Their only opportunity to use laptops and access the internet is at school and thus they need this chance.
The learning gap just continues to grow between the students who have access at school and at home and those who do not. Our school district is not able to provide this technology to all the students thus the teachers need to reach out and hope to have grants funded to help their students.
