My Students

The majority of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. More than 70% of our school is on free and reduced lunch and all of the students in my class are on the autism spectrum. My students spend the majority of their day inside the general education classroom and come to my room for additional small group reading, math and social skills instruction.

While their disabilities may range from mild to more severe, one thing they all have in common is their love of technology and ability to communicate their thoughts and ideas more effectively while using it.

This is a difficult task when students don't have the proper tools. My students are curious, creative, and imaginative learners. They work hard to solve problems, and discover new things. In our class we are writers, readers, mathematicians, but most of all dreamers! Given the necessary materials, students have a stronger opportunity at achieving their personal best. With a wide range of learners, it is essential that I have the tools and resources to support their varied needs.

My Project

In our resource classroom we often need to think outside of the box to ensure students are able to access the standards and meet their educational goals. Having seen the content presented in traditional ways in their general education classroom, it is essential that I then provide multiple and varied options for how my students will access the content as well as how they will show what they know.

Many of my students love cartoons and comics, allowing them to show their learning via Powtoons and Prezi presentations allows them to be creative as well as feel successful.

In order to do this we need technology in the classroom. Having laptops at the students fingertips allows them to create unique ways to show their learning. Some of my students struggle to communicate their understanding or debate with their peers due to their disabilities as well as language barriers. Technology allows these students new access as they are able to communicate more effectively via programs like Nearpod and Google Classroom.
