This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students surge into the library as soon as the doors open. This is their safe haven; it is a place to escape the reality of their neighborhood and find a chance to excel. By the end of the year, I want them to have research skills to help them achieve their goals.
My students all live in a low-income nearly 100% minority neighborhood.
Many households cannot afford a computer. Those who are fortunate enough to have one do not have an adult at home who speaks English or can assist them with their research. The school has steadily lost enrollment to charter schools and magnets in more affluent neighborhoods. But the local community is ready to turn this around. We have the support to change our school into a STEM Academy. However, to do this, we need some updated computers so the students can learn research skills.
My Project
Students will be able to conduct independent research after I teach several research lessons. Also, I have created a library practice course. Students can take this as a Common Core elective and learn not only how to manage a library but how to do advanced research. In return, these students can teach their peers how to conduct research when teachers bring their classes into the library. Students will be able to check out the computers for in-library use before school, at lunch, and after school to do their research projects. They will learn transferable research skills and address Common Core ELA standards.
These laptops are the only hope for most of my students.
They don't have access to technology at home. Much of the technology on campus is badly outdated and cannot be repaired. These computers will provide access to research skills that will give my students a fighting chance to excel when they get to high school and hopefully be the first in their families to reach college.
