My students need chromebooks in our school library to focus on research skills in 2018. We have access to databases and brilliant research tools, but no technology to practice the skills.
The students at my school are a diverse group of young strong minds. They are growing up in Harlem, a changing and beautiful community. They are curious and and open minded. Our school is a PreK-8th grade school full of siblings and generations of love.
In many ways they have the world at their fingertips; a swipe of the metrocard and they can see "the greatest city in the world." They've experienced a lot.
Like all children they are learning to process so much information and calibrate it in meaningful ways.
My Project
Our school library is well stocked with beautiful books. The fiction books are timeless. The stories are well loved, but our non-fiction quickly outdates itself and we have NO technology to research connections to their curriculum or topics of interest.
I am requesting 8 Dell Chromebooks so students can partner up to research interest topics.
In the upper and middle grades, library standards expect students to learn research skills and note taking skills. I have so many student led project ideas that cannot be completed because the students don't have any technology to do the research. For example, I'd love for them to choose a biography of choice and to research vetted reliable resources such as the New York Public Library brilliant free databases. Receiving the chromebooks would take the learning away from watching me and put the inquiry into their hands. Research skills are life skills whether we are preparing students to be college or career ready. They need to know how to use technology safely and intelligently.
