Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students often don't believe me, but I tell them that the highlight of teaching is interacting with them. They are 9th graders and beginning to experience some of the most terrifying yet thrilling years of life. Some, at school 45 minutes early, can't wait to meet up with their bestie and hang out in front of school. At 8:30 AM some arrive and are fighting the fatigue of that morning grind but share a hug with each classmate in our advisory crew.
They hold tight to an idea of who they think they already are and at the same time are terrified by the uncertainty of who they will be.
12th grade can be a precarious time of self-confidence, vulnerability, and insecurity. I see them love school because it is the center of their social world and yet want to avoid it because it is a future they sometimes understand as an idea more than a possibility.
I'm inspired by their talents, their fight, and their laughter.
My Project
Our school is part of the AP for All program of the New York City Department of Education. Research shows that students who take AP courses and exams are more likely to graduate college on time and the gains are greatest for low-income students and students of color. Two of the AP courses at WHEELS are AP Seminar and AP Research. Our AP Research class is an high school course developing college-level independent research skills. Without a laptop for each student, access to things such as the internet, research materials, and research articles severely limits the research process. One laptop for each student is a necessity. We currently don't have enough for each senior.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
