This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In this technological society children are highly motivated when given the opportunity to learn using a computer. My students although young are no exception to this. They love to interact with technology and look forward to the opportunity as often as possible.
This year I am teaching a kindergarten/first grade, at risk, English as a Second Language, class.
There are 25 students in my class and their abilities are at varied levels. This makes grouping students an interesting task. My students are mostly Spanish dominant and struggle to acquire the English language. Our school is located in a high-need, low income community.
My Project
My goal is to obtain a set of computers that a small group of children will be able to use during skills block and center time. There is a great computer program called Samson's Classroom that my students are obsessed with! I have an account in which I create my own personalized word lists using words that we are studying or have learned. When the students log on they play various spelling games with these words and are so involved in competing with the character and challenging themselves that they don't even realize that they are reading and spelling words! It is for this reason that I would like to create an area for the students to work in a small group at various times of the day using this program and many others that are out there waiting to be discovered. We are looking into a math program as well that will help build their number recognition and counting skills.
My students are eager to learn and are especially excited about using the computer to "play" games.
They are engaged and learning so much. I appreciate your support in providing computers for multiple students to use. Thank you in advance!
