My students need Acer Chromebooks to learn, research, and explore more about the world around us. Reading and writing lessons can be conducted outside of the four walls of our classroom with the use of technology.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Energetic. Attentive. Curious. Collaborative. Engaged. Loving. Leaders. My students encompass all of these traits. They are energetic and engaged and have a true love of learning. My students come from diverse backgrounds and have unique needs. Our Title I school provides services to students from low socioeconomic homes, different cultures, and a variety of learning needs. Many of my students come from Spanish speaking homes and most of the time are the only ones who speak fluent English. Other students come from English only homes and don't understand the cultures of our student population. Hurricane Harvey caused widespread devastation across the state of Texas at the beginning of this school year. Though our campus was not damaged by the floodwaters, our district and many families have had severe financial impacts. I want to provide amazing resources to my students without causing increasing financial strain on the families or schools.
My Project
Having the Chromebooks in our classroom gives us the opportunity to take learning outside of the classroom without ever leaving the room. Many of my students haven't experienced much of the city we live in, much less anymore of the world. Our reading and writing lessons can be so much more intriguing and engaging if we could take virtual field trips while writing about trips and vacations. Their minds could fully grasp onto information given through videos or interactive web pages while researching about influential Hispanics during Hispanic Heritage Month. They also can provide us with the opportunity to Skype with other classes or authors and practice reading and communication skills.
Many of my students are from low income families and haven't been given the privilege of travel.
They don't have the background knowledge that others who have been able to experience our country and other parts of our world have. In order to reach them in every way possible, I have to bring the world to them. Technology affords us this opportunity. Not only can they learn about the world, they can teach each other about the world. Through programs such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Prezi they can use research they have gathered and teach the class about a topic. I can use Kahoot! and Quizizz to test their knowledge and gather data in an interactive way rather than the standard pencil and paper. We can also improve reading comprehension and fluency through weekly use of Imagine Language and Learning, an online reading program used at my campus.
