This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our middle school is located in Houston, Texas in a rapidly changing neighborhood. Most of the students in my class come from hard-working immigrant families. As their English as a Second language teacher, I have the pleasure of introducing them to a new language and helping them adapt to a new life. For my newcomers, which is what we call our first-year immigrant students, entering school can be a frightening experience. It is my mission to help them learn to communicate and tell their inspirational stories.
Many of my students have been through hardships that most could not imagine, yet they are striving for success.
Not only are my students hard workers, but they also have the biggest hearts. They are always willing to help and dedicate much of their time to helping others as well. They have brought a lot of joy to a very stressful job. They have left such a big impression on me and have inspired me to work as hard as I can.
My Project
Having access to technology is vital to education today. With the fast growth of technological innovation affecting our everyday lives, my students will need quick access to information. We need Chromebooks. My students will use language programs and applications to better their English fluency and vocabulary and to learn about their new lives in the United States.
My students have stories that need to be shared with the world; with easy access to technology, they will be able to write their stories to inspire others the way they have inspired me.
In our class, we focus on the importance of writing. We do this for academic success and to be able express ourselves. To successfully tell their stories, they need to learn the language properly. There are many programs and applications that will help with fluency as well as writing.
Our ESL students use a fantastic computer program called Achieve 3OOO where students have access to many non-fiction articles. To make sure that our students take advantage of the great things this program can do, students need to use it consistently. The school district has recommended that we use it at the very least two times a week. With shared access to the technology at our campus, it can be difficult to incorporate this program in my weekly lesson plan. However, with your generosity, having computers in the classroom will allow students to have direct access to this program and many others that can help with their language development, fluency, comprehension and writing skills.
