My Students
Many of my students with autism have difficulty with motor control, communication, and academics. Computers are highly motivating tools that my students love to use to practice the skills they need to work on most.
My students are part of a low-incidence disabilities cluster program at a public school.
They are six to nine years old and all have autism. They have varying degrees of difficulty with communication, social interactions, and organization. They are very curious and eager to participate in class, but sometimes require extra assistance and hands-on materials to allow them to do this.
My Project
I am requesting a laptop computer and mouse. My students will be able to use software and unlimited Internet resources to practice academic skills such as phonics, reading, and number concepts. They will also be able to practice important skills such as using a mouse, typing, and conducting research.
Many of my students with autism could not operate a computer at the beginning of this school year.
Through practicing with adults, even my students with severe motor impairments are now able to operate a mouse and independently navigate computer programs. My students are highly motivated by working on the computer and have greatly improved their fine motor skills, attention, and knowledge of academic concepts such as phonics. We need another computer to meet their heavy demand!
