My Students
You know that feeling you get when there is a new smart phone on the market and you just have to have it. In this high tech world we have more access to technology to help us learn but some students do not have the advantages that others have. My students need your help.
My students are a loving, hard-working group of EL kindergarteners at a Title One school in Nashville, TN.
About 65% of my class are English Language Learners the other 35% are from low economic families and they are working hard to be independent readers by the end of the school year. I am proud to be part of a Title One school that serves primarily low-income families. I feel a need and desire to teach and help these wonderful students.
My Project
With a laptop, students will use programs that will help them blend words in order to become better readers. Students will use the laptop to build critical thinking skills by solving word problems and playing strategy games. Students will also be able to use the laptop during independent work time by using games that are created and specifically for their level of reading and critical thinking skills. These games will build letter-sound fluency and number sense.
Virtually all affluent schools have technology as part of their toolkit to ensure that their students learn to the best of their ability.
My students are already on the other side of the opportunity gap. Research has shown that their low economic status already puts them at a disadvantage. This laptop would give my kindergarteners a boost in ensuring that all of them will learn and build their way to higher education.
