Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the privilege of teaching the *best* kids in the world. These students and their wonderful families come from all over the globe to create a unique and beautiful learning community. This year alone, my students represent 15 countries in Asia and South and Central America.

As an English as a New Language Teacher, I work with students in three different classrooms, teaching kids in person every day, while also conducting at least three remote classes daily.

Our school is just a few blocks from Elmhurst Hospital, once the covid epicenter of NYC, and many of our students' families experienced deep personal loss and immense financial hardship.

My Project

My outdated laptop recently broke, with the mouse and the keyboard no longer working, further complicating the challenges of online teaching. Furthermore, I move between multiple rooms to teach, lugging all my equipment with me each time.

A lightweight, working laptop would mean the world to me and my precious students: I'd be able to focus more on effective instruction, making joyful and creative literacy videos, teaching with interactive slides, and engaging my English language learners in rich, curious discussions rather than worrying if my battery is about to die or if my external mouse will fall out of the USB port!

A MacBook Air would allow me to achieve my goal of creating engaging content videos accessible beyond my live instruction. This is invaluable to my English Language Learners, enabling them to go back and access the lesson again, facilitating their comprehension while enhancing their vocabulary. It would help me create interactive slides so my students can engage in hands-on learning as they write their sight words and other responses directly on the slides in our Google Classroom. I'd also love to continue to record a series of songs that were a hit in the spring: Shared Reading poems set to music and movement using ESL strategies.

I am requesting a MacBook Air to lighten the load on my 3-hour roundtrip commute to Queens! My special students are totally worth the commute, but my back is paying the price for carrying all this equipment back and forth on three modes of public transport each way every day! A lightweight, working laptop would greatly lighten my physical and mental load and keep this teacher in it for the long haul!

Thank you so much for your consideration!!
