This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My amazing students need YOUR help! Open up their world and equip them with a laptop! We currently have no Internet access and no computer to connect to our really useful LCD projector.
We are a class of 26 hard working, eager learners in an urban Southern California charter school.
The goal of our charter school is to equip 100% of them to attend and compete academically at the top 100 colleges and universities in the nation. That's a big goal considering the surrounding district, one of the biggest in the country, only graduates 55% of their students from high school. We graduate 95% and 85% of them go on to a four year university.
My students are on their way to college. Many of them are the first ones from their families, but they know they'll get there with hard work.
Most of our kids are on free or reduced lunch because of their low socioeconomic status. At charter schools, we do more with less funds and our kids rely on others for help getting materials in the classroom.
My Project
My students need a laptop computer with webcam, internet access, and HDMI capabilities. Laptops open the world to students. My students need to be able to access the Internet in my classroom. A question shouldn't have to wait until students go home or we get to access school computers - we should be able to have students research on the spot.
Students will be able to see presentations and ideas shown to everybody when a laptop is hooked up to our LCD projector. Showing a student a simple animated clip can make a topic more real than 20 minutes of examples. Don't believe me? Try explaining geometric shape rotations and flips, the diversity of the reinforest, or countless other topics. Now how much easier it if you can see pictures, videos, and quick presentations about those topics? A webcam equipped laptop will allow my students to create videos - newscasts and performances become the real deal when you're using technology to document them! Laptops enhance learning!
MANY of my students do not have access at home to computer technology.
To be literate in today's society, you have to be fluent with technology. It's not enough to simply know how to use it. It has to be integrated into your habits. The only way to do this is to have access to technology. The classroom is a perfect place for this to happen.
Help my students' curiosity and work ethic take flight. Equip them with a laptop to access the rest of the world.
