it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere."
Albert Einstein
For students with learning disabilities this statement speaks volumes. They traditionally have difficulty accessing core learning techniques, but using creative measures can help them overcome this challenge.
Our class consists of students in the special education program.
They are mainstreamed into a general education classes. We are a moderate, poverty school who receives very little funding through local or federal programs. For this reason, getting technology in the hands of our students can be difficult because of major budget cuts. Students in our program benefit greatly from assistive technology because it allows them to access core curriculum in an alternative format than traditional means. Our students also benefit from alternative assessments such as performance based projects.
My Project
I would like to request a laptop that students could use within their mainstream courses. Many of our students have poor writing skills and have difficulty completing assignments. If students had access to a laptop they can use programs that help with thought organization, reading aloud, grammar and spelling checks, and idea generation. Students would also be able to present alternative assignments rather than the standard paper and pencil project. My students love technology and are highly motivated to make movies, PowerPoint presentations, and Microsoft publisher projects. Traditional assignments that seemed impossible and boring will become exciting and motivational when they are allowed to complete them with the laptop. My students will have to learn to interact with one another when working on these projects. I will also be able to teach them how to access resources to find valuable information using the laptop.
This project means so much to me because my students will be given an opportunity to be engaged in their own learning process.
It will boost their confidence and give them opportunities that can not be given in typical general education classroom.
