Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are a full spectrum with a diverse campus in race, culture, socioeconomic status and interests. Our campus serves approximately six hundred and thirty-five students, grades seventh through eighth and between the ages of twelve to fourteen. Ethnically, our students are approximately eighty-seven percent minorities with forty-five percent being Latin American, twenty-six percent African American, and thirteen percent Asian and Pacific Islander.
We have a variety of different learning challenges and needs that our students deal with on a daily basis.
Twenty-five percent of our students are currently English Language Learners. Our Special Education students make up ten percent of the entire site. We are working hard to ensure that all of our students get their needs met.
My Project
During distance learning, small group instruction is more important than ever. I need a laptop so that I can help support students in this time of distance learning. I want to start running small group sessions where I can give students support in many different classes.
From help with general education assignments to reading groups, I want to help anywhere I can.
Many of my students have expressed that they are feeling overwhelmed during distance learning. I want to change that. I am hoping that being able to provide lessons to help live lessons will help some of my students feel less overwhelmed.
I am hoping to help students feel more prepared when working on their independent work. If I am available to help my students during their independent work time, I may be able to help with frustration levels. I also can't wait to hold reading groups where I can share some of my favorite books with our students. If I can Zoom with them while keeping data about their comprehension levels, I may better be able to understand what their needs are on a deeper level. The more data we have, the better we will be at creating specialized lessons for students. Please help us better understand our students.
