About My Students

My students are incredibly dedicated to building robots and educating their peers and the community about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Last year, our team of 40+ members exceeded our expectations by having 2,000 of community service hours. These hours include organizing our events, tutoring, volunteering at the local science center and at nonprofit organizations.

Our team participates in For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robot Competition (FRC) each year by building a robot and doing community outreach. One limiting factor in our potential is access to a (separate) laptop dedicated to controlling the robot and for programming and teaching how to program. My students already have plans on how to teach themselves programming and their peers just waiting a functioning laptop.

The ability to program a robot requires logical and abstract thinking, not to mention, persistence and troubleshooting. These are prerequisites for college and characteristics of successful professionals.

Also, the willingness to teach others programming nurtures more sympathy from the leading students by figuring out why students are programming incorrectly and how to deal with frustration in programming.

In Their Own Words

We want to purchase a computer for our robotics team to teach other students coding. Our current computer, now several years old, no longer functions properly due to being used extensively and running too many task-intensive programs. A new computer will facilitate our teaching, and allow us to give all of the students in our robotics team a better coding education than what we have at the moment.

We will have a small group that will be in charge of becoming experts in coding. They will also be in charge of teaching coding to the rest of the robotics team. Because of this, the entire robotics team will be exposed to similar levels of coding. We will also allow students to take their learning further by helping to code on the robot so they can have the opportunity to learn beyond what we teach them.

The mission of our robotics team is to inspire underrepresented youth by breaking down barriers to STEM. We believe that many underrepresented students would be able to thrive in a STEM field, but they do not get enough experience to develop a passion. This laptop will make it easier for us to accomplish our mission due to our entire team receiving more exposure to coding. Having the ability to properly expose these students to STEM will set a pathway for them to succeed in the future.
