This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a unique school whose mission is to bring Montessori education to students in an urban environment. We are a diverse classroom, which brings together students from the inner-city with students from the surrounding suburban towns. Our classroom is made up of 25 students in grades 4-6.
Our goal as a classroom is to treat each other as a family, and we use the Montessori philosophy as our backbone to do so.
We are a classroom that works together to create an inviting and comfortable space where all students can learn.
My Project
As a public Montessori teacher, I have the unique challenge of incorporating Common Core language standards into our Montessori curriculum. One area that is very challenging for my students is independent practice of their language skills. Most of my student struggle with reading comprehension and vocabulary and a large portion of my students are English Language Learners.
Daily practice of their vocabulary, fluency, and reading comprehension skills are essential to help them meet grade level expectations for reading and writing.
The materials chosen will provide my students with opportunities to practice their skills independently as well as in small groups. Each activity is specially chosen to match with the Montessori philosophy and gives students a chance to make choice and independent practice of their skills. These materials are a perfect way to incorporate the state and national standards into our curriculum.
