Language Skills in a Autism Center Based Program

My Project

I am a Speech-Language Pathologist in a Center Based Autism Classroom. Vocabulary instruction is a key component of this program. The use of visuals to accompany story books help the children learn content rich vocabulary. They also allow the kids to practice additional language skills such as sequencing and narrative language, skills which support literacy. Interacting with the stories encourages carryover between the book and real life experiences. In addition, manipulatives (toys) allow children with Autism to practice perspective taking and the use of imaginative play providing background knowledge to relate back to the story books. These books, story related visuals and manipulative toys will allow me to expand on what the children are learning and aid vocabulary development.
