My Students
Take a moment to remember all of the struggles you faced in high school - academic, social, personal - and now imagine going through all of that in a language you were not yet fluent in. When I consider this prospect, I am truly inspired by the English Language Learners (ELL) at our school in Brooklyn, New York, who approach school each day with enthusiasm despite this obstacle.
Our ELL program includes students from a dozen different countries, from Haiti to China, Latvia to El Salvador, all of whom bring rich voices and experiences to class each day.
We believe in a truly inclusive environment where language is learned socially, so with the exception of English as a New Language class, our students are working side-by-side with the other 600 students at the school.
Teachers work together to meet their diverse needs so that no ELL student gets lost in the shuffle. Once they know their voices matter to our community, the stories and experiences they contribute to the classroom are invaluable.
My Project
This project will enable English Language Learners to partner with the Brooklyn Museum in the fall for 6 sessions where we explore the intersection of language and art as a supplement to our curriculum. Beginning in September, we will examine the politics of language by asking, How is language embedded in culture? In what situations has language been used to control people? How have individuals resisted language oppression?
We will take these questions to the Brooklyn Museum for a series of 6 lessons with a teaching artist, where we will apply the politics of language to our understanding of artwork.
It is always invaluable to take our learning outside of the classroom and utilize the unique cultural resources available in New York City.
In a twenty-minute walk from the school, students arrive in a space where they are face-to-face with masterpieces from all over the world. By applying language to describe this artwork, as well as the sociolinguistic concepts we are studying in the classroom, students will select a piece for the focus of a podcast. This project will be guided by our teaching artist both in the museum and in the classroom over the course of the six sessions.
The value of integrating cultural enrichment in the classroom and applying language to the world around us in meaningful contexts cannot be emphasized enough. This project gives students the opportunity to explore, respond, and document their understanding in ways that simply cannot be achieved behind a desk. Help us take our learning and ideas into the world by contributing to this collaboration with the Brooklyn Museum.
