This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in a highly urban area of Los Angeles. More than 85 percent of the students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students come to school every day ready to learn and appreciate the resources we are able to provide, but those resources that the school can supply are fewer and fewer each year as the budget shrinks.
My class of curious fourth graders is packed with motivated learners who want to know more about the world around them.
They like to ask questions and love getting detailed answers as they explore their environment. Finding the materials to use for hands-on exploration, however, can be a challenge.
My Project
Open with an exciting topic sentence! Use colorful details! Don't forget proper punctuation! These are the directions students hear when faced with yet another writing assignment. But writing is arguably the most difficult subject for students to master. How do we make it more accessible to them?
Using games to reinforce important vocabulary, grammar, and reading skills allows even the most reluctant readers and writers to improve their language abilities.
Reading and writing go hand in hand. The more students read, the better writers they become. I've chosen a variety of reading and writing skills games and vocabulary building games to help students work on these essential skills. Not only will my students reinforce their reading and writing skills but they will also practice teamwork and good sportsmanship when it comes to "winning" and "losing" the games. The socialization skills students learn from playing games are crucial to becoming well-rounded citizens in school and in society.
