My classroom is a place for students to explore the art of storytelling and the different ways we can read and tell a story. We focus a lot on analyzing literature and a variety of texts to explore the meaning and themes of stories. My goal is to inspire students to love reading and writing.
I teach in a gifted program in an urban school.
The program is very diverse in terms of ethnicity and socio-economic status. Many of the students are gifted in multiple ways. Some are academically and intellectually gifted, and others are gifted in the arts (music, singing, and dancing). They are great children, and I am fortunate to teach them. I am very inspired to take them to new levels in their acquisition of reading, writing, thinking, speaking, and listening. I want my classroom to be a place where students are challenged to think for themselves and explore their ideas about stories.
My Project
With the requested speaker and headphones, my goal is to have students connect with everything they read in the course, and music is a great way achieve this. There are many similarities between telling stories in literature and the stories in songs. Students will listen to a variety of music that connects to the literature thematically, culturally, and historically.
My students will listen to a variety of musical genres throughout the year and connect the music to our texts. We are reading How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, so students will listen to merengue and bachata. Our next novel is Black boy; students will be exposed to a variety of blues and jazz. Later in the year, we will read Shakespeare, and I will introduce them to Elizabethan music and dances.
My classroom speakers were stolen over the summer.
Whenever I play anything on my computer, students can barely hear it. Having a set of classroom speakers will improve my classroom because students will be able to hear a variety of music at an appropriate volume.
