This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a Title 1 school and an NYC renewal school, which means that it's struggling and still largely under resourced. However, when my students walk into my classroom, they should feel safe, invited, and inspired to learn. Learning, though, is sometimes the last thing on their minds. Many of my students have responsibilities outside of school, such as taking care of other family members, helping with younger siblings, or maintaining a job. All of my classes are co-taught with wonderful co-teachers, to accommodate the high proportion of students that are English language learners and who receive special education services. Living in the Bronx, my students are no strangers to hardships.

Yet despite all they have gone through, my students show up to school every day, and I want them to know that they're loved, appreciated, and cared for.

Seeing the perseverance of my students is the the reason I come to school every day. Having students from so many cultures and backgrounds, I am truly humbled to have an impact on the next generation of New York, and the next generation of leaders.

My Project

Even though I'm a first year teacher and acquiring my first set of supplies is challenging, I want my students to have all of the resources that they need to thrive! Right now my classroom is empty, but by putting up colorful posters of the literary genres and posters about growth mindset, I hope to make my classroom as bright and vibrant as my students are!

My students engage in a lot of group work, and having individual dry erase boards, chart paper, and markers allows us to visually represent our ideas.

Socratic seminars, various discussion protocols, and whole group share outs are significantly easier if students have access to visuals and places to prepare before they share. Having supplies like chart paper and markers also facilitates differentiated activities, such as jigsaws, gallery walks, and class debates.

Working directly with texts will be much easier if students have a shared class set of pens, pencils, post-it notes, and index cards, so that no student feels left out or unable to learn because they do not have access to supplies. In addition, a document camera allows me to project annotations, selections, passages, pictures, student exemplars, and even videos on the whiteboard, so different learning styles can be accommodated.

As public school budgets seem to be stretched thinner and thinner each year, I want my students to know that they have a teacher who fights for them, who advocates for them, and who is ready to help them learn and grow throughout the course of our year together and beyond.
