This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students know how to use the navigator on their smart phone but the terms GPS, sextants, latitude and longitude are foreign to my students. Many of my students have never been on a boat and have never received nautical training so they have never experienced the need to learn about navigation.

My students are very bright, creative, and enthusiastic.

They represent all ethnicity's, language abilities, and academic abilities. Many will be the first in their family to go to college and their motivation to succeed inspires me to provide them with meaningful learning opportunities.

My Project

I am requesting sextants and spotting scopes to help my students learn about navigation based on visual landmarks and longitude. This will help them learn about ancient navigational tools and their limitations. The GPS activity will emphasize the coordinate system of latitude and longitude so they can understand modern navigational tools.

My students are on the verge on breaking out into the world.

I hope to instill in them a sense of appreciation for the outdoors and a sense of capability to exist in an outdoor environment. Part of this goal requires that students know how to travel in this outdoor environment so they need to learn about ancient navigational tools and understand modern tools. I consider this a life skill and that will help my students (and their future families) venture outdoors!
