I am a 27 year old teacher of a class of 27 intelligent, curious and wonderful first grade students. I work in an extremely impoverished area of the South Bronx. Although I am not from the area, I have grown attached to the kids from the area as well as the community. This is my fifth year teaching at my school. It is extremely challenging, but incredibly rewarding. My kids are special, and I really, truly feel that I can help them.
This year I was given the opportunity to teach a gifted class. My children produce amazing work that truly blows me away. I have some students who are currently writing their own chapter books, including pictures, and they are only in first grade!
I would love to get my class a laminating machine to preserve my students' work. Some of their work is so amazing, that I want to publish it and protect it so they can have it for years to come. When I was in elementary school, many teachers did this for me, and I still have this work to look back at to this day.
My students are very young, and when I give them their work, it often winds up tearing or getting ruined. It breaks my heart, because I want them to have their work to be proud of, and to be able to show off to their parents. Having a laminating machine would enable me to preserve their work, and have it to remember and be proud of for years to come. That's a gift that I'd love to be able to give to my kids.
