Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are English Language Learners in a Spanish developmental bilingual program, which means that they are exposed to listening and speaking in English, but learn Spanish reading and writing first. These students transition into English reading and writing in second grade. My students attend one of the largest public elementary schools in Wisconsin, with nearly 800 students, 98% of whom qualify for free and reduced lunches. As the second and third grade English as a Second Language Teacher, I help to bridge Spanish and English Literacy.
If you were to enter my classroom, you would hear students speaking primarily in Spanish, but as I enter the room students begin to shift to English!
They are bridging two languages to become future leaders in an ever-changing world and I will do all that I can to support them.
My Project
In Second Grade, the English Language Learners transition from Spanish reading into English reading. They need interactive activities in English Phonics to support them as they make comparisons and connections between both languages. These materials: laminating sheets, highlighters, markers, and colored ink will make the Phonics Work Station more engaging.
My English Language Learners with be engaged in the Phonics Work Station by using interactive activities that will sustain their interests, support progression and help them retain information.
These materials will make learning more meaningful as the English Language Learners make comparisons and connections between both Spanish and English phonemes.
