About My Students

Yashira, also know as "Yoshie" to her sisters in softball, has been team captain of the illustrious Lady Tigers for the past two years. She is the epitome of determination both in the classroom and on the field. Yoshie is a leader in all that she does and created this project to celebrate the team.

Last school year, we had the amazing opportunity to take 22 inner city girls to Florida State University. You can view the Lady Tigers' inspiring and extraordinary journey on YouTube "Lady Tigers Documentary - Concrete Dreams". Softball has become a way of life for my girls, a means to escape the harsh reality of inner city life. As leaders, Yoshie and her co-captain Bryana have been instrumental in establishing a culture of respect and sisterhood to ensure that the Lady Tigers would continue to persevere during difficult times. Entering her last year as a Lady Tiger, Yoshie requested the opportunity to take the reigns of this awesome project in order to inspire her peers. Upon graduation, Yoshie desires to convey to her sisters in softball that they do not have to succumb to the will of the streets. She elected Bryana to assist her in creating an awesome celebration of the Lady Tigers' accomplishments.

Girls on the Lady Tigers have become fixated on the notion of perpetual failure. They have endured so much and yet, still have the courage to battle on. Dealing with a coach who has battled stomach cancer, the Lady Tigers pulled together to make their family (team) even stronger. Yashira has recognized the struggles of the Lady Tigers and witnessed firsthand how determination and dedication assisted in overcoming these obstacles. She and her co-captain believe by celebrating their accomplishments, the Lady Tigers will remain on the road of success.

In Their Own Words

I am Yoshie, captain of the Lady Tigers for the past two years. This will be my last year as a Lady Tiger and before I graduate, I want my team to acknowledged for all the hard work that we have done. Living in my neighborhood makes you feel like there is no hope but that is not true. I can be somebody if I believe in myself. I want my team to start believing in themselves and celebrating our accomplishments will help them.

My name is Bryana and with Coach's help, Yoshie and I will lead our team and become successful this year. We will celebrate all that we have done. Our coach is always fighting for our education but now it's time for us to start fighting for ourselves. We will show everyone that we deserve to be recognized for all out hard work. Bringing this project to life will be hard but Coach taught us to never give up and we won't. He is like our father and we will show him that we can do this.

Many of us had low self-esteem, anger problems and did not care about life. Living in our neighborhood makes it really hard and makes us feel giving up. But the Lady Tigers keep going! We never give up because we are determined to be successful.
