This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Don't you want to be one of us?", is something a gang member might say to one of our students in front of their own home. We must do something to empower them and give them the knowledge they need to make the right decision.
I teach in an inner city Chicago neighborhood infested with gangs. Our students face tough situations day in and day out, some so tough I am not even sure how I'd get through the day. But as teachers, we have the power of reaching students and providing them with the opportunity to learn and grow and develop into knowledgeable, insightful, caring individuals.
With your help, my 8th grade students will be able to dive into a book that brings them face to face with the realities of gang life. Through discussions and journaling students will explore and experience together the deadly consequences of joining the gang world.
You will make it possible for my students to realize that there are alternatives to the gang life and that their future is solely in their hands.
