Lackluster Library Needs A Plethora Of Publications

My students need a diverse classroom library filled with different types of books (non fiction/fiction) from different genres and different cultures.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Dycus's classroom raised $375

My Students

Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him. - Maya Angelou

My second grade language arts students have not yet formed this habit or deep need to read.

These students are from a public school, which is considered to serve a moderately impoverished population. Since our school groups homogeneously for language arts my group of students in particular lack the availability and exposure to books at their reading level, as well as a diverse selection of publications.

My Project

Almost all of my language arts students are reading below grade level. More than half of them are over a year below grade level. This project will help develop the lower range of my leveled library. In addition, it will add diversity in culture and genres available for the students to read. In my classroom students have the opportunity to pick several books from their reading level and several books from other reading levels to practice reading independently or reading with a partner. After reading each book, the students write reading responses to the publications and also take a comprehension quiz. Most of my students are lacking confidence in their reading skills and find reading incredibly difficult. With your assistance students will learn to love to read and learn to read independently!

When children learn to love to read it highly impacts all other aspects of their life and other subject areas.

With their love of reading, children then have the confidence and perseverance to attack more difficult texts and stories. Your donations will greatly promote this love of reading!
