Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school. Many students get free or reduced-price lunch. The majority of students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and may only get the two meals a day they receive at the high school. The majority are also English Language Learners. My students are filled with personality and many have experienced hardship no sixteen-year-old should have experienced. Unfortunately, my students can barely bring in the basics they need to be a prepared learner in class (paper, pencil). But what they do bring is enthusiasm, positive attitude, and imagination. Our campus has a strong sense of community; we really are a family. We even have a supper program where students can eat dinner after school for free.
My Project
My students learn by doing. The best part about their science class is being able to do investigations with their peers to explore scientific phenomena. Some of our labs require distilled water. Currently, I buy distilled water or ask for parents or students to donate them. Having a water distiller in the classroom will be a great way to save and reduce the amount of single-use plastic. The wash bottles are needed so that each lab group has distilled water.
My environmental science students need the soil sample cores and the transect tape for their outdoor field studies.
With these two pieces of lab equipment, the students can safely retrieve soil samples on our hikes and we can bring the cores back into our classroom to study the different properties. Right now we only have four samplers, so groups are quite large and we have to share. The transect tape will be used for when the students learn how to calculate biodiversity using species richness and evenness. The plastic beakers and graduated cylinders are a great tool for when we do labs outside so equipment does not break.
All of my science students will need individual plant lights for their own lab group investigations. I love using plants in the classroom. Every year, I have been able to expand and add so many new plant labs. Currently, we have light banks and an indoor greenhouse in my classroom. However, this year it was brought to my attention that some lab groups have a completely different idea of their own and need a portable plant light that is not attached to a bank. The dual swivel head will continue to be a piece of equipment that is available to my students to encourage their curiosity.
