My Project
Each year every department is allotted a specific amount of funds. These funds are used by each department to purchase needed materials. In the science department that money doesn't always go towards very much; science materials and equipment are often expensive and we're forced to find more cost efficient labs to continue to give the students these hands-on experiences.
The items I'm requesting consist of lab materials that would allow future students to continue to do labs we've completed this year.
These materials would also allow for the possibility of completing new labs since we'll have more materials and equipment available to use.
Recently my forensic students completed a TLC lab with fibers. They had to first boil the fibers with NaOH to get the dyes out in order to do the TLC procedure. We used capillary tubes to put the dyes on chromatography paper. The capillary tubes we used were left over from a chemistry lab conducted years ago and there were only a few available, so students had to rinse it out between samples. This could have led to cross contamination in their tests. With this project, each group could have one capillary tube per sample leading to more accurate results.
There are labs that require each group to have their own materials such as a test tube rack or ring stand and clamp. We as a department don't have enough racks or stands for each teacher to use if we're all doing labs and this has often led to issues setting up for lab and additional stress. Getting more of these so that each of my lab groups can have their own set up would reduce the confusion among student groups in lab and give our department more equipment to work with when needed.
