La La Leveled Books for First Grade

My students need 18 sets of leveled books to help them practice reading skills and strategies.

My Students

I have been teaching the upper elementary grades for 10 years now and this is my first year teaching first grade. I accumulated so many "upper grade" materials throughout the years. However, this being my first year teaching first grade, I do not have a variety of leveled books for my students.

My students attend a Title 1 School in Brooklyn, NY.

This school is Title 1 because a lot of the children come from homes where the income is very low. My students are very nice and friendly. However, I know that when they go home there is little or no reinforcement of the things that they learned in school. Having a selection of books for them to take home from school will hopefully encourage them to want to do more work at home.

My Project

I've requested a variety of leveled books for my classroom. The reason for this request is because I have a limited supply of leveled readers, and the students have read practically all of the books that I currently have in my library. For the holidays, I gave each student a brand new book and the look on their faces was priceless. They loved the look, feel, and smell of a new book. Not to mention, they all voluntarily read their books over and over again. I can tell that they were more than appreciative to receive such a gift. I know that new and appropriate books will be beneficial to helping these students become great readers.

Students that read books on their reading level become more fluent and independent readers.

If a book is too easy or too hard, they aren't giving themselves a chance to really practice the skills and strategies they have learned. Having a leveled library in our classroom with an assortment of genres and levels will allow the students to really apply the fluency and comprehension strategies that they have learned.
