My Students

Who am I? Where do I come from and how does this help form my identity. How does culture shape our identity? Is it possible to overcome the stereotypes that have been put on our race? My students all come from different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and face questions like these everyday.

The students I teach come from extremely different backgrounds.

The student population is 2000 students. Sixty two percent of our students are on free and reduced lunch which makes us ineligible to receive title I funding, but most students cannot afford to school materials. We have students who will be the first ones to graduate in their families if they successfully complete high school. Some students were born into wealthy families and do not know what it's like to be in need.

My Project

My students need a copy of the novel La Casa en Mango Street to read for the Spanish IV curriculum. By the end of the unit that I plan of teaching with La Casa en Mango Street, students will know what components of their lives help them identify themselves. They will recognize the diverse backgrounds that their peers come from and they will also know that through hard work and determination anything is possible. Although some students are born into a difficult life, it does not mean they cannot surpass the hardships and be successful.

Because my students come from such drastically different backgrounds, this book will help them all find their own identities and hopefully appreciate the culture and race of others.

It will also allow them to appreciate where they came from no matter the circumstances, but give them the opportunity to see that they can rise above it and succeed.
