My Students
Young children love to move! My kindergartners are no exception.
My students are an energetic bunch who are most engaged during hands-on learning and playtime.
They are kind, compassionate friends who tend to one another when something is amiss. They make my heart melt every single day.
My diverse, primarily low-income school is located in a tight-knit community in the heart of San Francisco. Many of my students' cousins, parents, and even grandparents have attended our school! The community bond shows through as students giggle and play together throughout the day.
My Project
I teach at a healthy school. From the first day of kindergarten, students are taught the connection between healthy bodies and healthy minds. We practice what we preach in many ways. Students are given healthy snacks twice a day to fuel their brains. We offer P.E. three times a week, and Game Time once a week, which teaches students to play and move while getting along with one another during age appropriate games. We also have two recesses to allow children to move and play as they choose.
My students, last year, were motivated to get even healthier by adding more movement to each day.
They said, "Ms. M, if moving makes us smarter, then we should do it WHILE we are learning!" When they found out that one of the first grade classes got to sit on stability balls all day, they too wanted seats that would allow them to wobble and balance while working.
This project is kid-inspired because my students want more movement options throughout their day! Kore wobble chairs allow children to safely wobble and rock back and forth while thinking and working. They also build core strength in children as they balance. Core strength is often overlooked for young children, yet is incredibly important for setting the foundation for an active lifestyle.
