Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are special because they try very hard to be successful despite socioeconomic challenges. Many want to become lawyers or go into law enforcement. We are a Title I school serving a high-need population with dedicated teachers to support our students' dreams and help them overcome systemic barriers.
We have been chosen to participate in a special program from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the MetPLC, which will focus on social justice through art and objects.
Our students will learn how to utilize cultural institutions such as the Met to supplement their learning. This project will give them the tools to create their own masterpieces.
My Project
When my ICT Global students learn about early African civilizations, we will take a trip to the Met Museum to view some artifacts, including the Kongo Power Figure. This figure is special because it was used in conflict resolution rituals.
Each student will then replicate their own Power Figure with these supplies, devise a plan to incorporate their figure into a restorative practice ritual, and display to the entire school community in a curated museum walk.
I have also included portfolio folders and file holders to keep their work organized, as well as giant Post-its with cool markers to make thinking visible.
