This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Think back on your own kindergarten experience. Did you love coming to school, listening to stories, playing at recess or building with blocks? The magic of kindergarten is not only gaining the skills required to be a 21st-century learner but supporting our youngest learners with developing the executive functioning skills children need to thrive. The guided inquiry and magic of play will create lifelong learners who can collaborate and take risks. Research shows students who experience a quality early childhood education have stronger problem-solving skills, and the social-emotional skills needed to succeed in today’s job market. When children are nurtured as well as taught to read, write, and think critically, their growth can be endless. I love teaching kindergarten at a public elementary school in Los Angeles.
Our students come from a low socioeconomic background; all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and the majority of the students are English language learners.
However, statistics don’t tell the whole story. My students are inquisitive, hard-working, and caring. They will count, read, write, but most important, become kind humans ready to make this world a better place!
My Project
Imagine walking into your first classroom; it is big, the windows have safety screen grates, filled with strangers and you might not speak the same language as the other children or adults in the room. THAT CAN BE SOME SCAREY STUFF. Out of the corner of your eye you spot a fun looking pretend play area, with a toy stove, sink, dolls, pretend food and kid sized furniture. This play center is designed to give student's a feeling of inclusion and security. Young children learn through play experiences, materials that represent them and feel familiar. Thus building the bridge between home and school, giving students a connection to their first classroom. A connection that values their own developing identity.
Help me create this bit of magic for my students, as they enter school for the first time.
The items I am requesting will create a spot in our classroom that feels familiar and safe. A little corner where students can feel comfortable and build strong connections between home and school. Students will find a kitchen stocked with play food ,food find they have in their own kitchens at home or baby dolls with skin tones to match their own. Adults can facilitate young children's play, but really our job is to be the narrator, restating children's ideas and thoughts. Teachers make play safe and comfortable for students to be problem solvers and creators of worlds that are special to them.
Play is the love language of young children, help me give my students the tools they need to gain confidence and executive functioning skills needed to feel great about their first school experience.
