Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students walk into my classrooms bright, energetic, and ready to let their creativity reign supreme. In Art their imaginations are allowed to flourish and grow with little inhibition. For the majority of my students a place to engage in creative visual, aural, and tactile learning experiences while honing their fine motor and critical thinking skills.

100% of my students take part in free breakfast and lunch programs, and a large majority of them are ELL or come from a home where English isn't the first language.

I teach over 250 students each week between two schools and even with those added challenges every single one of those students loves to come to school. In art many of those who experience a language barrier during their other classes, thrive in a setting where the main language is the drawn image not the written word. Still each and every one of them strives to try and overcome that barrier, and they all put forth their best effort to improve their literacy and understanding each day. With your help our art rooms will be much better equipped to support their literacy goals on a daily basis.

My Project

This year at my two schools I and the other art teacher are planning on transforming our art classrooms into spaces that fully incorporate literacy into our art learning. These reference posters would provide students timely and easily accessible information on the artists we will be studying while also allowing them to familiarize themselves with their work.

These posters are essential to our plans to expose our students to a wider world and to encourage them to create art as they hear stories of artists who have overcome similar difficulties and situation to the ones they face in their own lives in order to become successful.

These posters will both be posted throughout our classrooms (1 set for each school) as well as in a dedicated artist of the month board that the whole school can access. They will be fully integrated into the analysis portions of our lessons as we work with our students to analyze, dissect, and think through how an artist's background can influence their choices and decisions while creating art. The posters themselves contain specific information on the artists and their artwork that students will have the opportunity to read in small group and whole class discussions. They will also be used as reference materials during short writing assignments and art history scavenger hunts, and as visual cues to help students create connections between these artists and themselves.

Between the two of us we teach and guide over 700 students in between the two schools. With your donations these posters will play a part in our ability to provide each and every single one of them increased exposure to art history and literacy opportunities in our classrooms as well as an extra boost in their art making throughout this year and many more.
