I have an amazing group of students this year who love to read! Many of them have shared their favorite authors with me and have begged me to add more true stories to our classroom library.
I have been teaching at a public high school in Central New York for many years.
This district is rich with diversity. About 60% of the students here are classified as minorities, and approximately 10% of the students speak a language other than English at home. Unfortunately, the poverty level here is high; in fact, approximately 51% of students in the district receive free or reduced price lunches. Although the poverty level is high, most of the seniors are planning to attend two and four-year colleges in the fall.
My Project
These incredible students I have the honor of teaching love literature. Many of them, boys and girls, bring outside-of-class reading with them. Earlier this week I actually had to ask a student to put his book away until the class was finished taking notes. I want to be able to supply these students with literature that they may not be used to reading such as memoirs, biographies, and other nonfiction books. That is why I am requesting a collection of ten titles, some with accompanying audio CDs. Some of the titles include Looking for Alaska by Josh Green, High Fidelity by Nick Hornby, and The Other Wes Moore.
By supporting this project, you will give my students the opportunity to read true stories about real people, all of whom have overcome obstacles and struggles that my students may someday face.
You will give my students the chance to read literature they might not have otherwise be exposed to.
