Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At our Bronx High School, lateness is a colossal problem for our freshmen class. To motivate students to come in early, I would like to start a morning knitting club. I held a lunchtime knitting club at my old Middle School, and it was packed to capacity! Students love the satisfaction of making something with their own hands.
Unfortunately, my students cannot afford knitting supplies. They face a lot of obstacles in their lives including gangs, drugs, and violence. Knitting could be such a positive force. Besides being a lifelong skill and way to relieve stress, it might become a source of revenue for them.
After learning basic knitting, our first project will be to make teddy bears for the Mother Bear Project, which provides children impacted by AIDS in South Africa with teddy bears. Participating in a community service project will give students a sense of pride and show them that they have something wonderful to give to their communities, themselves. Please help them discover this!
