My Students

I teach fifth-grade math and science at a Head Start through 5th-grade elementary school in North Miami. Most of my students are high-poverty and have very limited technology at home.

After Hurricane Irma struck, the financial situation for most of our students became even worse and up to this day, they are still facing the challenges of coming to school with basic supplies.

Sadly, for most of our students, Internet access and the use of computers or any kind of technology, are luxuries that they just do not have at home. My students are always excited to use technology in our classroom, and when we do math or science center activities, they rush to the workstations, in order to explore online resources. As aforementioned, most do not have computer access at home, so the only opportunity they have to learn using technology is at school.

Also, we need consumables/classroom supplies related to math and science, so that our students can get "hands-on" experience while learning.

My Project

My students need a KNEX Education Simple Machines Deluxe set, so they can learn how to build simple machines using math and science concepts. "Get ready to learn something new!" is how I greet my fifth-grade students every single day. They always answer with a resounding, "Time to learn something new!" as they enter my class with smiles on their enthusiastic faces.

Our elementary school has a high number of students who are first-generation immigrants from Haiti.

Most of my students were affected by Hurricane Irma's destruction. More than ever now, the basic amenities they need to prosper and succeed, are not readily available to them.

We strongly believe that all children will learn if given the right tools and technology. As their fifth-grade math and science teacher, my main objective is to enhance and improve their young learning experiences, especially when it pertains to their learning environment. The KNEX Simple Machines Kit will teach students how to build bridges and other structures they see every day on their why to school and back.

I will use math and science concepts to show them how STEAM relates to real life problem solving. Math especially, would no longer be abstract as they will see the value in learning for example, proportions as it relates to constructing a scale or crane.
